Like you, our Tri-Cities PFLAG chapter is very concerned about the growing atmosphere of anti-gay harassment and abuse occurring in our schools. We are all aware that it can have a devastating effect on the self-esteem and lives of gay/lesbian teens who are often overwhelmed by their budding sexuality.

As parents, family members, and friends of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people, we are looking for dedicated individuals like you to partner with us to improve conditions, provide safe schools, and ensure a safe, equitable and inclusive learning environment for all our children, including our GLBT ones. Our available booklets provide information about the legal landmarks for schools and some things that schools can do to support students.

The campaign will unite PFLAG chapters, representatives and state councils in creating a wave of safe schools activities across the country in October 2000. It will offer tools for PFLAG activists to initiate or expand safe schools work and to form strong coalitions with other local groups committed to safe schools.

PFLAG is not a counseling group. We serve as a support, education, and advocacy group and provide opportunities for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and their families to talk about their situation and ask questions.

We currently have a packet of “what you can do” and “how to” pamphlets and brochures plus informational documents from knowledgeable sources that we can offer at no cost to you or your school. Because we are committed to improving educational experiences of GLBT youth, we would be happy to provide you as many copies as you need. Instructional resource notebooks and manuals are also available from GALE (Gay and Lesbian Educators), US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights, National Education Association (NEA) and the Michigan Department of Education. A list of these sources and of our PFLAG resources is found below. You may use this form to order directly by mail or phone.

Schools, Sexuality and Shame: The Teen Years

PFLAG believes that high school is a proving ground; a place where children begin to test themselves against the expectations of adulthood. It's also the place where most of us discover our personal identity, including feelings which move us to grow as sexual human beings. Know anyone - anywhere, anytime - who found that journey simple? It's never easy, but even considering the "normal" anxiety of the teen yeras, most people can't imagine the shame implicit in being different - in having feelings that go against the mainstream. PFLAG works with teachers and school administrations to help schools to be places of safety. Our "Safe Schools" program provided Midland area teachers with inservice programs to equip them to help guide students who are dealing with being different.
